Wayne Co. Cattle Egret - 27 Nov 2023

Shout-out to Robert Irwin for finding a Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) yesterday in the picnic area at the Detroit International Wildlife Refuge Humbug Marsh Unit. I was unable to relocate it an hour later (10 am) but it returned by noon and was seen during the afternoon hours of a snowy/rainy day.

This morning the bird was relocated near the fishing pier so I stopped by to look for it. Todd Palgut and Joe Kwazniewski were photographing it next to the sidewalk to the pier, so it was easy to pull up, grab the scope, and digiscope it from 30' away.

The bird flew a few feet across the sidewalk, but only stayed momentarily before flying off to the bay on the north side of the refuge.

Its a great find for Wayne Co., and even better that it is being seen in the snow at the end of November!
